OPTIGEDE is a Franco-German project whose aim is to capitalize on the combined experience of seven local authorities varying in size from 37 to 510,000 inhabitants, one business association, and three agencies working in waste management. The project lasted 39 months (October 2004 – December 2007). The 6 main goals were to:
- Provide guidance in a regional approach
- Prevent waste production
- Lower the quantity of hazardous waste eliminated with household waste
- Optimize facilities and services
- Develop solutions to collect, valorise, and eliminate individual waste
- Optimize costs
